Do schools kill creativity?

I had a discussion this morning with my sister about the education system in Romania. She was (and she still is) frustrated about the lack of interest of most of her teachers, about their lack of professionalism, about the fact that she doesn't feel she learned a lot in the last semester.

Unfortunately, there is not much she can change about the school, as it's the best drama school in Romania. She even struggeled to get here.

Her frustration and disappointment reminded mine, when I was a student in Romania. Confronted with the same problem back then, I took the option that my sister is taking right now - becoming an autodidact and search for sources of learning and development mostly outside the academic area. Sad, but effective.

The discussion I had with my sister reminded me that she is the only one in our family (and I mean all of the people we know to whom we have a family relation) that chose an artistic path. Isn't it sad ? Isn't is sad what mentality, society, education can do ?

I try to imagine what would have been to dedicate myself to an art ? How would it be to have a way/an instrument/a tool for expressing my innerfeelings.

I am not trying to put the blame on others for not being an artist. Who knows, I may even not have the skills for it, but thinking that it would have been possible makes me dream. I may not be an undiscovered talent (sic), but I am sure there are plenty out there. Every child has a talent, it just needs to be discovered.

Here's a wonderful speech on creativity in education systems:
Take 20 minutes of your time and watch it. You may be a parent or will be someday. Watch this video.

Do you think you could have been an artist if you had been encouraged when you were young ? Do you dream about playing an instrument, dancing, painting, singing, etc. ? Did you perform an art when you were young ? Did you discover you are good in a certain art later in your life and wanted you knew this earlier ?
